Member of the Month  – December

About to show off that form.

The coach writing this member of the month post may be a liiiiittle partial to this particular person. But rest assured, all coaches collectively agree on our MOMs and this month was no different. This guy is not only one of Swink’s longest standing members and biggest supporters, but he is also tall, blonde-haired-blue-eyed and handsome. (OK, OK, I’ll stop.)

Joe (Joe-6-Pack) Herd may not be the most outspoken member at Swink, but he is definitely one of the most vital pieces of the Swink puzzle. He is there before and after every event, setting up and tearing down. He supports the gym in more ways than you can see, because he never boasts or brags. Aside from his admirable actions behind the scenes, have you seen this guy workout??!!  There is a reason he won “Best Form” at last year’s Christmas party. He is a great example to both new and experienced members at our gym. Joe Herd is silent but deadly (no flatulence pun intended.) Swink would not be the same with this red-headed guy walking through the door every day. We are proud and humbled to have him as our December MOM. Here is what he had to say about the honor:

What’s your favorite thing about Swink

Swink is where I met Margaret Darlow Woodward. That is the best thing. Without Swink, there is no Joe-6-Pack and Megatron. Besides that, Swink is just a flat out fun place to let off some steam, laugh a lot and get a little more fit. The people and the coaches make Swink what it is. Swink is family.

What’s your favorite movement/workout?

It depends on the day. At the beginning of my CrossFit  career I was a big fan of Cindy. However, your taste changes as your skills progress. Just like how I didn’t enjoy coffee a few years back. Now, I can’t wake up without it. Currently, my favorite workouts are the ones where I can push Margaret Darlow along and we have a large group working together at various skill levels. This is where you can really see the Swink community coming together to support one another. Others may not admit it, but you tend to find another gear when you work with people that are slightly better than yourself.

What’s your least favorite?

I am not the biggest fan of being upside down. Especially out in the open. Being a rather tall individual, I have a long way to fall on my face or back. Besides, tall lanky people aren’t meant to be upside down. It’s a fact Jack!!! Unless……..you have Julie spotting you. Leanne knows what I’m talking about.

What’s  your favorite clean meal/snack?

Anything that Margaret Darlow Woodward cooks for me that I’m told is clean. I believe her even if it’s not 100% true. But she would never lie to me. She is a fantastic cook if nobody knew. Since it is getting a little cold outside, she makes a mean pot of chili.

What’s your favorite cheat meal?

All of the things!!! Pizzas, french toasts, cakes, pies, cookies, ice creams…….I have a bit of a sweet tooth.

What advice would you give to someone new to Swink?

You gotta keep on keepin on! Life’s a garden, dig it! On a more serious note, to someone new, I would say don’t give up or get frustrated when you look around and see other people running faster, lifting heavier or not gasping for air when you feel as if you are going to fall over dead. What you don’t see, is all the hard work that person has put in before you stepped foot in the door. People sometimes tell me how effortless I can make things look when they feel like a new born baby dear. What they didn’t see is the struggle, and trust me it was real. You will get there one day, and somebody new will walk in, see you, and think the same thing.
